Internal Locus of Control

Today I scored a 7 on Rotter's Locus of Control Scale indicating I have more of a internal locus of control. This result was unsurprising to me because I know I cannot control some events, such as this COVID-19 pandemic, but that I can control how I react to it. However, locus of control is a spectrum so I think most people, myself included, experience swings between internal and external depending on the situation.

After a sudden life change, whether it be a new diagnosis or a pandemic, many people may be left with a feeling of helplessness. As an OT practitioner, it is important to recognize that external locus of control mindset both in ourselves and our clients. It is important in ourselves because whatever attitude you bring into your client interactions will influence their attitude. Also, if as the therapist you believe the situation is out of your control, then your intervention will not be effective either. It is also important to recognize in our clients because if they feel helpless, then they are more likely to be unmotivated to participate in therapy or their meaningful activities. As an OT practitioner, we can show them steps they can complete in their daily lives to take charge of their life and wellness again.
